Bray push Kildare out of FAI Cup

May 31, 2006

Paul Caffrey's goal put Bray into the third round of the FAI Cup

Kildare County's dreadful home record continued as Paul Caffrey fired home with just 14 minutes to put Bray into the last 16 of the FAI Carlsberg Cup at Station Road.

Caffrey took full advantage of a mistake from Barry Clancy to race through and give Brendan Kennedy with no chance with a low shot.

The result was tough luck on Kildare who almost opened the scoring after 56 minutes. Alan Mulcahy swung a free kick in from the left, Darren McKenna rose highest but his header thumped off the underside of the bar and bounced away to safety.

Chances were few and far between in what was generally a poor game and Kildare had the clearest sight of goal in the first half after just six minutes.

Stephen Cooling split the Bray defence with a clever pass but Darren McKenna fired just wide under pressure from Philip Keogh.

The second half was as poor as the first with both defences coming out on top and extra time looked a certainty until Caffrey struck.

Kildare threw men forward in the closing stages but they just couldn't find a way past the Bray defence where Wesley Charles was voted as man of the match.

Kildare County: Kennedy, A Byrne, Clancy, Malone, P Byrne, McCrossan (Delaney 79), Cooling, Mulcahy, McKenna, Scully, Reilly.

Bray Wanderers: O'Connor, Tresson, Gifford, Charles, McGovern, Fox, James (Tyrell 66), Keogh, Doyle, Caffrey, O'Brien (Zayed 86).

Referee: P Whelan (Dublin).
