Caretaker Managers for Wicklow County Football Team Appointed
May 24, 2006
Selector Jimmy Callaghan from Blessington and adviser Gerry Grehan from St Jude's in Dublin have been appointed as caretaker managers of Wicklow's county football team in the wake of the resignation of Hugh Kenny.
And it was revealed yesterday that two of Kenny's three selectors, Conan Daye (An Tochar) and Anthony Gray (Shillelagh) resigned with him following the nine-point drubbing inflicted by Carlow in the Leinster championship at the weekend.
County GAA chairman Mick Hagan said that Jimmy Callaghan and Gerry Grehan would take over the running of the team for the All-Ireland qualifiers and the Tommy Murphy Cup.
The players will return to training for the All-Ireland qualifier match on June 17 after the June Bank Holiday weekend and the first round of the local senior football championship.
"The Wicklow team is not as bad as they played against Carlow and we aim to show that in the qualifiers," said Hagan, who has called a special meeting of the County Committee for June 16 to discuss the hurling and football situation in the county, especially the management of county teams.
