Wicklow trial cancelled due to huge turnout
October 18, 2006
New Wicklow football manager Mick O’Dwyer was forced to abandon plans to hold his first trial last Saturday after 121 players arrived in Aughrim.
“There was actually too many players there to do anything, would you believe that?” laughed Garden County selector Kevin O’Brien.
“We had planned to get together, just to meet them for the first time and play a bit as well.
“In the end, Micko talked to them about the requirements for inter-county football, about the importance of being early for training and things like that. It all went very well and we were delighted with the interest shown.”
After meeting the players for the first time on Saturday, O’Dwyer and his selectors O’Brien and Philip McGillycuddy attended the Wicklow IFC final on Sunday in which Ashford defeated Stratford. Trials will be held on Wednesday and Thursday night of this week and the new management intends to whittle down the hopefuls to an initial training panel of 36 or 37.
