Wicklow duo suspended for three months
December 30th, 2007
Two players, one from Glenealy and the other from St Patrick's, have been suspended for 12 weeks after being sent off in a Wicklow IHC semi-final that sparked an unseemly row in the car park after the game.
Glenealy midfielder Robert Byrne and St Patrick's centre-forward John Dee O'Brien were sent off by the referee at different times for alleged striking and head-butting respectively. A third player sent off, St Patrick's midfielder Paul Murphy, was not suspended as he was given his marching orders for two yellow card offences.
These are the first punishments meted out by the Wicklow disciplinary committee since it received the report of the special committee set up to investigate the shocking incidents that occurred after the match in Arklow.
A Glenealy player alleged that he was bitten in the chest in front of his wife and daughter and threatened, while a photographer claimed that he was threatened that his camera would be broken if he took pictures of the incidents.
