Walsh Makes Wicklow DebutSaturday, April 14 2007If you could take these pictures back in time a few months ago and show them to Carlow supporters, you’d be dismissed as carrying out a hoax. But on Sunday, a rumour that sounded ridiculous when it first circulated pre-Christmas was made flesh in Aughrim.
Thomas Walsh, former Carlow star, was a late addition to Wicklow’s starting 15 for the crunch NFL clash with Sligo. Wicklow needed a win to gain a place in next year’s third division, but Sligo beat them 0-17 to 1-10, thus leaving them with Carlow in next year’s division four. It also means both Wicklow and Carlow will go straight to the Tommy Murphy Cup if they are beaten before the final in this year’s Leinster championship. Walsh mixed the good with the bad on his Wicklow debut, looking a little rusty, according to observers, understandable given a lack of recent match practice. The announcement of his place in the starting line-up got a big cheer from the Aughrim crowd. He was well contained by Sligo’s Tony Taylor in terms of fielding, but some trademark sallies forward won a couple of scoreable frees for Mick O’Dwyer’s men. He also created the Wicklow goal for substitute Paul Cronin. Walsh lasted the full 70 minutes and O’Dwyer will hope the game-time will stand him in good stead for Wicklow’s championship opener with Louth, their next competitive fixture. |
