'Micko Effect' Lifts Wicklow HurlersTuesday, April 24 2007Wicklow dual star Leighton Glynn believes that the Mick O'Dwyer effect has helped inspire the county's hurlers to a national final next Sunday. Wicklow lock horns with Laois in the Division 2 decider and Glynn is relishing the prospect of hurling at Semple Stadium prior to the glamour Division 1 showdown between Kilkenny and Waterford.
Glynn was part of the Wicklow team that lost an All-Ireland B final by 13 points to Laois in 2002, but after defeating the same opposition already this year in Arklow, Wicklow are confident of winning the league crown - and the prize of a play-off against Limerick for a place in Division 1 next season. Glynn admits that at the start of the year, success with the county's footballers seemed a more realistic proposition. "The effect that Micko has had on the county has rubbed off on the hurling too," he said. "The hurlers really felt they needed to do something too and manager John Mitchell has done a fantastic job. He's a Cork man, from a good hurling background and he's given the whole team confidence." Mitchell, whose side was hammered by the Kilkenny U21 team in a warm-up match last weekend, may have to plan without key players Michael Anthony O'Neill and Geoffrey Bermingham for Sunday. O'Neill is undergoing treatment on a hamstring injury, while Bermingham has an ankle injury. |
