Late, Late Penalty Saves BraySaturday, April 21 2007Bray Wanderers 1-1 Cork City Bray Wanderers midfielder Paul Caffrey held his nerve to convert an injury-time penalty as the Seagulls inflicted another damaging defeat on Cork City at the Carlisle Grounds on Friday night.
Bray had claimed a shock win over Cork in the final month of last season, a result which went some way towards derailing Cork’s title defence. And Cork’s quest for vengeance foundered deep into stoppage time at the Carlisle Grounds, when referee Pat Whelan adjudged that Bosnian midfielder Admir Softic had handled under strong pressure from Bray defender Clive Delaney. The decision sparked a furious response from the Cork players, not least Softic, but Caffrey calmly slotted the kick past Michael Devine for the equalizer from virtually the last kick of the game. Bray had come closest in the first half from Delaney’s header, which came back off the woodwork, but Cork improved after the break and looked booked for all three points when defender Neal Horgan helped himself to a rare goal on 63 minutes. Delaney, at the centre of everything on the night, was guilty of a slack clearance and Roy O’Donovan picked out Horgan, who finished well past Chris O’Connor. |
