Hurling Manager Calls for Credit Where DueSaturday, April 28 2007Wicklow hurling manager John Mitchell has challenged player Leighton Glynn's notion that the success of the county hurlers can be linked to county football boss Mick O'Dwyer.
O'Dywer's rein as football boss in the county got off to a flying start and dual star Glynn feels that the feel good factor has rubbed on to the hurlers, aiding their super League campaign, where they have won all six games they have played, including an impressive Division 2A triumph over Sunday's Division 2 final opponents Laois. However, Mitchell feels there is no connection between the two and wants the Garden County hurlers to be lauded on their own merits, especially with a place in Division 1 next season still a big possibility. "That's irrelevant, really," Mitchell says of Glynn's connection with Micko. "They are two different games, two different objectives. Micko has won eight All-Irelands, we have won eight matches. We do our job. We concentrate on what we do, we are not interested in what the media have to say we just get on with the job and do it. "There is much character in the team now. One thing leads to the other, they are inter-related. If you are winning, it is easier to have more character, it is easier to win." Over 30 players turned up at Arklow for Wicklow hurling training on Monday as Kilkenny legend DJ Carey held a squad session, concentrating on speed work, ground hurling, blocking and hooking. |
