Green Light for Walsh Transfer to Wicklow

Thursday, April 5 2007

All in the Garden County is rosy at last as Thomas Walsh's transfer from Carlow to Wicklow was last night approved by the Leinster Council.

The drawn-out controversy, which already had two instalments at previous Council meetings, ended with the Fenagh native cleared to play for Bray Emmets and Wicklow with immediate effect. .

The former Railway Cup footballer is virtually certain to go straight into the Wicklow team for Sunday's crucial Allianz League Division 2B clash with Sligo in Aughrim.

Walsh's transfer application was originally rejected due to confusion over his address in Greystones and wasn't heard the second time because of technical defects in the paperwork.

However, it was third time lucky last night as the Leinster Council sanctioned the transfer after hearing from Walsh and Wicklow County Board representatives, Michael Murphy and Tom Byrne, all of whom gave evidence of the player's new address in Greystones.

Carlow had objected to Walsh's move, but Wicklow were able to satisfy the Leinster Council that he is resident in Greystones and therefore eligible to switch club and county allegiances.

The decision will come as a major boost to Wicklow as Mick O'Dwyer's troops face into next Sunday's game which will decide if they or Sligo play in Division 3 or 4 next year, and whether they are eligible to play in this year's All-Ireland qualifiers.

The winners will qualify for Division Three while the losers will head for Division Four.

Under new regulations, Division Four teams who fail to reach their provincial finals won't be allowed to compete in the All-Ireland qualifiers. Instead, they will play in the Tommy Murphy Cup competition.
