Wicklow Sinn Féin Welcomes Refusal of Bray DevelopmentWednesday, April 11 2007An Bord Pleanála's rejection of the €2 billion development on the Dargle floodplain in Bray has been welcomed by Cllr. John Brady of Sinn Féin.
"The board issued a unanimous decision. There was no ambiguity. It vindicates what myself, SWAP and the local residents have been saying all along: any development in this area must be done right. We don't oppose proper development, but this is an enormous project with huge implications for North Wicklow. It must be done properly," Brady said. There were three main reasons behind the board's decision: * Building on the golf club land before any flood protection work has been completed would be premature. "This is a high risk area. There is no protection in place for the proposed buildings or for residents of low-lying areas along the river," Brady noted. * No traffic plan is in place. "With hundreds of new houses, apartments, shops and offices, traffic will be a major issue. The plan should also include a Luas link to the DART line. Otherwise we will end up like a situation in town where the red and green Luas lines are not connected," Brady said. * There is not enough open space in the proposed scheme. "A lot of this ties in to what we have said all along. They should leave the banks of the Dargle alone and install some robust flood protection before any cement is poured over the golf course," Brady said. |
