Saturday, June 23 2007

A puppy farm in south county Wicklow which was raided this week is being described as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty and abuse ever seen in this country.

Seventy-six dogs, many of them pups, were found on the farm living in appalling conditions.

Thirty were brought to a sanctuary in Wicklow and the remaining 46 were taken to Dublin, where 16 had to be put down.

The vice-president of the Wicklow Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, Fiona Gammell, says she has never seen anything as bad as the conditions on they were being kept in.

She said the dogs had no room to move, no light and no fresh air supply.

Some had broken legs and missing eyes, while many were unable to even stand up.
