Wicklow Public Transport 'a Shambles', says Sinn FeinFriday, August 3 2007One of the main issues affecting Co. Wicklow is Rural Public Transport, or the lack of it, that is. Commenting on this issue Arklow Sinn Fein Rep. Adrian O'Reilly stated that Communities in areas like Avoca, Aughrim and Tinahely are finding it very difficult to get around and visit neighbouring towns like Arklow.
When the new business enterprise The Bridge Water Centre opens, people will flock to be part of this experience and to shop in Arklow. Sadly the lack of rural public transport and resources will make this an impossible journey for a lot of people, Government funding is urgently needed to end this shambolic affair. Private hire transport companies are small local business's and they are working hard to stay afloat, they need to be working hand in hand both with Local and National Government to address this issue. Sinn Fein are calling for a voucher system on private hire travel to cover elderly and disabled people travelling costs. This should be paid for by National Government under the free travel pass scheme. Also South Wicklow needs extra resources for night time Public transport like the Nitelink in Dublin to cover social activities and to curb drink driving. We need to see enhanced and dedicated investment and proper road and rail public services in South Wicklow sooner rather than later. |
