Wicklow Population Increases by 22,000Monday, April 2 2007Wicklow TD Liz McManus is urging the government to take on board the significant increased population figures for Co. Wicklow as measured by the CSO in their report published last week.
"According to these figures there has been an increase of almost 22,000 people in Co. Wicklow over the last 5 years to 130,356 from 118,309. This population growth is not being taken into account by the government when it comes to providing essential services for Co. Wicklow. For example we have one of the highest levels of class sizes in primary schools in the country and there is still no news in relation to new schools that are needed for example St Catherine's School in Newcastle. In fact the government policy to relocate St. Brigid's School in Greystones and subsume it into a school in Charlesland is a typical example of the short sighted thinking that this government has displayed over the last 10 years. I hope these CSO figures will serve as a wake-up call for a new approach in Co. Wicklow but it is clear what we need is a new and different government capable of meeting the challenge. |
