Wicklow Holiday-Maker Dies Tragically in SpainWednesday, May 23 2007A young man from the Baltinglass area on the Wicklow/Carlow border lost his life in tragic circumstances while holidaying in Spain last week.
Nigel Keogh, a 21 year old from Barronstown, Grangecon, county Wicklow, died while swimming in the sea near the popular southern Spanish resort of Alicante on the Costa Blanca. Mr Keogh was on holiday in the resort with his 18 year old girlfriend, who is also from the Baltinglass area, when he ran into trouble while swimming in the ocean. It is believed a freak wave swept Mr Keogh out to sea as he stood in the surf with his girlfriend early on Sunday morning and the young man was unable to recover. Members of his family flew out to Alicante on Monday and the Irish embassy in Madrid is providing consular assistance to the dead man's family. The young holiday-maker became one of two foreign tourists to die on the Costa Blanca in the space of 48 hours when a British man plummeted to his death while cliff climbing on the outskirts of Altea near Alicante. The young doctor was mountaineering with friends on Monday when he fell 80 feet from a cliff face and was declared dead shortly after being discovered by rescuers. |
