Sit-in at Wicklow Bookbinders

Employees at Ireland's largest library bookbinders are entering their 10th day of a sit-in.

All 14 workers at Reilly Bookbinders in Wicklow town have been staging a round-the-clock protest since last Wednesday when they were told the company was closing its operation.

The company, which restores books for many Irish universities and State-funded libraries, has plans to establish a European centre of excellence in an eastern European country.

AdvertisementThe company has issued a statement saying it has engaged with the union through the Labour Relations Commission and will continue to do so.

Management says the company made an offer to staff through SIPTU, which it says it has yet to receive a response to.

The statement added that the prompt resolution of the dispute was imperative for the survival of the company, which is in a delicate financial position.

Shane McKean of the Irish Print Group division of SIPTU, which represents the workers, has called for the appointment of a liquidator in a bid to obtain redundancy payments due to the workers as quickly as possible.

SIPTU says the company has referred workers to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment insolvency fund, which the union says could take months to process the claims.
