Serious N11 Crash Highlights Labour Call for Road ImprovementsMonday, March 26 2007[Statement from Liz McManus, TD] Just this morning while launching 'Getting Wicklow Moving', a plan to highlight the county’s transport priorities for the coming years, The Labour Party called for urgent action to make a lethal stretch of the N11 in Wicklow safer. At the same time, a serious accident occurred when a truck overturned on the very stretch identified.
Today Cllr Nicky Kelly launched this document to outline the priorities for transport in Wicklow. Cllr Kelly said: “My single biggest concern was that the dangerous stretch of road along the N11 between The Beehive to The Tap had not yet been funded. It would appear that the money that was to be spent on this stretch of road was diverted to Waterford, Transport Minister martin Cullen's own constituency. “It’s a scandal that it hasn’t been dealt with already, and today’s accident is further proof as to the urgency of the situation.” Deputy McManus said: “It is clear that Minister Cullen could fast-track the process and get the process underway immediately, and him hiding behind NRA convinces no-one. “Nicky and myself want to make sure that people can get to and from work and home and can go about their family activities safely and easily. “Our document represents the first time that Wicklow has had a transport plan. Our objective is to set out the priorities for transport in the county, including a safe and good quality road network. “This plan is comprehensive and covers every element of transport including rail, luas, buses and provision for walking and cycling, especially for school children. “Thousand upon thousands of Wicklow people end up stuck in traffic as they come and go every day. This document outlines the steps we feel need to be taken to address this. “Needless to say the safety of our road users must be the priority.” |
