Roche Asks Wicklow to Act on Graveyard

Thursday, December 6 2007

Minister Dick Roche has asked Wicklow County Council to take “effective
steps to end the ongoing difficulties regarding public access to the
Yewtree/Balisland Graveyard.”

“There has been an ongoing difficulty with access to the graveyard for some
time. The Council, as the relevant statutory authority, should enter into
negotiations to resolve these difficulties without any further delay. A
graveyard has existed at this point for many years. Clearly, if there is a
public burial ground in a location there must also be public access. In
other areas, where graveyards or burial grounds are surrounded by private
lands, it has been possible to establish public access. There seems to be
no logical reason why the Council, as the relevant statutory authority,
should not be able to resolve the problem at Balisland/Yewtree Graveyard.”
