Pizarro Refusal 'An Opportunity', says McManus

Wednesday, April 11 2007

Labour Party Deputy for Wicklow, Liz McManus, has welcomed as "necessary and wise" An Bord Pleanala's decision not to permit the development of the golf club lands for mixed development in Bray.

"This decision is necessary because it gives us in Bray the opportunity to ensure the best future development of the town. This can only be done if the protection of the residents of Little Bray and Seapoint Court against flooding is guaranteed first.

“There is also a requirement to manage the extra traffic effectively with good infrastructure. To meet that challenge the LUAS must now be extended into the heart of Bray. Without LUAS the traffic congestion will be unbearable.

“I support the proposals by the Office of Public Works to provide a flood protection scheme as well as the provision of an emergency plan by Bray Town Council. However, residents in Little Bray cannot be left at risk because of delays in the planning process. Flood protection is vital and the issue to be addressed now is the need to fund such a scheme.

“The decision to ensure that the traffic and flooding problems are dealt with first before development takes place is a wise one. It puts the responsibility now on the local authorities to resolve the infrastructural requirements and I am urging that no undue delay occurs.

“Bray badly needs fresh investment and the growth of its commercial centre. This can only progress with the best planning possible. What we need in view of this decision is the following:

· The provision of the flood protection scheme as a priority in consultation with local people ahead of the development.
· The extension of LUAS into Bray to connect with the DART
· A well designed traffic plan including an upgrade of the N11 and a new interchange at Wilford Junction.”
