Wednesday, 17 February, 2010
Dick Roche TD, Minister for European Affairs, has today welcomed the progress announced by the Government in relation to the construction of a number of schools in County Wicklow.
Sanction has now been given to Gaelscoil Ui Cheadaigh in Bray to go to tender and for the extension and refurbishment of its present school and once done to move ahead with the construction phase. Likewise Powerscourt National School in Enniskerry has received the approval to proceed with the tender process for its new school.
In Rathnew, the amalgamation of St Joseph’s Girls National School and St Ernan’s Boys National School has also moved a step closer. Consent has been given for the school authorities to appoint a design team later in the year.
St Catherine’s Secondary School in Newcastle has been authorised to prepare tender documents for the construction of the new school.
"I am delighted with the news that the five schools in County Wicklow can move their projects on and work towards the completion of modern facilities for their pupils. This will add significantly to the already huge investment in education in County Wicklow over the past few years.
Investment in school buildings will continue later in the year with a range of summer work schemes that allows local schools carry out minor but essential repair and refurbishment works that are urgently required.
Today’s announcement and further commitments to investing more money in school buildings later in the year will also provide many in the construction industry with opportunities to secure employment on these projects" said Minister Roche.
