Bray Recycling centre set to reopen

Wednesday 2 September, 2009

Sinn Fein councillors John Brady and Rossa Murray have welcomed the fact that the Bray recycling centre is set to reopen on Monday next after nearly 5 months of closure.

Cllr. Brady stated "I am delighted to have been informed today by officials in Wicklow county council that the recycling centre in Bray is set to reopen on Monday next. The loss of the recycling centre for nearly 5 months has hit people badly and has resulted in a lot of illegal dumping and tonnes of perfect recyclable goods ending up in landfill."

Cllr Murray continued "The recycling centre was forced to close nearly 5 months ago because of a recruitment embargo which was imposed on the council by the Fianna Fail and Green Government. This meant that the contracts of the staff who done fantastic work in the centre could not be renewed by the county council. The main result of the recruitment embargo is that 5 people where made unemployed and a widely used public amenity has been forced to remain closed for 5 months."

Cllr Brady concluded "It is really unfortunate that the former staff employed in the recycling centre will not be returning to work in the centre because of the crazy recruitment embargo which is hitting frontline services across the state. Wicklow county council has retrained 4 housing staff and 1 staff member that worked in the roads section and these staff are now going to operate the recycling centre from Monday on. The opening hours of the centre will remain the same as before it was forced to close. It remains to be seen how much this sorry episode imposed on the people of Wicklow has cost the taxpayer."
