Monument for the Irish, Championed by Co. Wicklow ManThursday, December 6 2007John Hendry Park could become home to a national monument celebrating Canada's fourth-largest ethnic group. Brendan Flynn is leading a campaign to raise $200,000 to build the Ireland Monument near the Trout Lake Park pitch that's popular among local hurling and Gaelic football players.
"This is for all the Irish people that ever got off a boat or a plane or a train into Canada," said Flynn, himself an immigrant from County Wicklow. The granite monument, with a golden harp on top, would include a map of Ireland, information about Irish dancing and sports, and a list of 100 people of Irish ancestry who made a difference in Canada. Included among them are hockey mastermind Brian Burke and Hall of Fame defenceman Bobby Orr. "In building this monument we simply say, remember us, the Irish people throughout Canada," Flynn said. |
