Man Dies on Notorious N11 StretchMonday, August 13 2007Colin Gannon (23) from Fr Redmond Park, Arklow, Co Wicklow, was killed instantly when the car he was driving was in collision with another vehicle at a notorious stretch of the N11 between the Arklow and Rathnew by-passes near The Tap pub on Saturday.
Mr Gannon's car mounted a ditch and sheared through a telegraph pole before ending up on its roof. Emergency crews had to cut him and his three companions from the mangled wreckage. Miraculously, the three occupants escaped serious injury. However, the driver of the other car, a young woman from Arklow who was on her way to work, was injured and had to be cut free from her car. Her injuries, although serious, are not thought to be life threatening. More than 30 people have lost their lives on this stretch of road over the last few decades. Saturday's crash occurred only a kilometre from where improvement works were carried out recently to make the road safer. Speaking after the latest death, Mayor of Arklow, Cllr Sylvester Bourke, called on the Government to wake up and complete the dual-carriage way between Arklow and Rathnew bypasses. "We have been lobbying for years to have this dual-carriage provided." and the Government are even ignoring their own local TDs and councillors on this issue. It is negligent and irresponsible not to do this road," he said. |
