Lack of Bray Blue Flag 'distressing', says BradyThursday, June 7 2007The conspicuous and continued lack of a Blue Flag for Bray's beach has been called puzzling and distressing by Cllr. John Brady of Sinn Féin.
"It is very curious that Greystones and Killiney can both get these flags while the town in the middle gets zilch," Brady said. "I raised this matter previously at Bray Town Council and officials said they would hold off until the sewage treatment stations in Bray and Shanganah have both been updated. However, one topic that always goes unmentioned is the old municipal dump on the north side of Bray Harbour," Brady said. "That dump is being eroded by the sea. You can see old rubbish sticking out from the cliff on the beach," said the Sinn Féin councillor. Brady noted that the dump straddles the local authority boundary between Wicklow and Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown. "No one seems to accept responsibility for it. Bray says to talk to Dún Laoghaire. They say it is the landowner's responsibility," he said. "What is undeniable, however, is the fact that the Minister 'for' the Environment lives in Bray. Yet Dick Roche cannot even get this matter sorted out. It is hardly surprising, I suppose, when the same minister was in the count centre in Arklow when the water had to be shut off because it was unsafe to drink," Brady said. "I am calling on Wicklow County Council and Bray to start work now to clean up Bray seafront, and to apply for a Blue Flag next year," Brady concluded. |
