Kelly Criticises Government Vote PlanFriday, March 23 2007General Election Candidate Cllr. Nicky Kelly has described any Government attempt to move the General election day from being held on a Friday, as an insult to the Democratic process and the electoral franchise of our young and first – time voters, in particular.
The purpose of holding the election on a Friday has been to allow students and workers living away but registered to vote in their home area. This attempt by Bertie Ahern and the Fianna Fail led Government is prempted by the bad poll result, this Government is receiving from 18-25year olds he stated. This is a case of hypocritically changing the rules and the date by political stealth if the polls don’t suit you. Many young people from this constituency although living away are registered to vote in their home area. A Friday voting day allows them to come home to exercise their political franchise. However this Government in its dying days seems intent to deny young voters their rights. |
