Grease Clogging River in ArklowWednesday, May 2 2007A sticky slick in an already polluted river in Arklow has led to calls for an investigation from Cllr. John Brady of Sinn Féin.
"I have had complaints from several people who keep boats in the Avoca in Arklow Harbour that a increasing amounts of grease can be seen in the river. It is sticking to the sides of their boats. All this is happening in an area, of course, that badly needs a sewage treatment plant," said Brady. Brady is Sinn Féin's candidate in the upcoming general election. "Many of the boat owners suspect the source of the newest pollution, although they are not sure. I am calling on Wicklow County Council to launch an investigation immediately to determine the source of this waste. The county then needs to follow up with enforcement action. We cannot keep spoiling our environment like this. The Avoca River is a valuable amenity that could be developed as a valuable attraction. Pumping raw sewage is already too much. The river needs to be cleaned up," Brady said. |
