Funding of €542,525 Wicklow Local Improvements SchemeThursday, March 29 2007Mr Dick Roche, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government has announced a grant allocation of €542,525 for Wicklow County Council under the Local Improvements Scheme (LIS) in 2007.
The Minister said "This record allocation represents an increase of 677% on the 1994 initial allocation of €69,836, an increase of 510% on the 1997 initial allocation of €88,882 and 36% on the 2006 record allocation of €398,855." The funding provided in 2006 under the Local Improvements Scheme enabled Wicklow County Council to complete 8 schemes with improvements to over 5.5 kms of non-public road. The Minister said that Local Improvements Scheme (LIS) Grants are used by County Councils to improve private roads. LIS works are funded by a combination of grants from his Department and contributions from the beneficiaries. The day to day administration of the scheme is a matter for local authorities. Total 2007 Allocations under the Local Improvements Scheme The total allocation for all County Councils in 2007 is a record €30 million. This represents a 20% increase on last year's record allocation of €25 million and is 8 times the 1997 initial allocation of €3.8 million. The Minister concluded, "the LIS is a very important source of funding for improvements to private roads in rural areas. I am sure that this year's record allocation will enable Wicklow County Council to make very significant progress under the scheme in 2007." |
