Funding Given for Aughrim Leisure CentreMonday, April 23 2007Cllrs. John Brady and Eamonn Long of Sinn Féin have warmly welcomed the allocation of €400,000 from National Lottery funds for the Aughrim Leisure Centre.
"Just one month ago, myself and John were knocking on doors in the town to collect signatures for improved facilities in the area," Long noted. "We went off with a very weighty petition. Everybody in town felt more facilities are needed. There wasn't even a proper playground for kids," Brady said. "The petition, subsequent publicity and political pressure surely played a part in influencing the decision to allocate those resources. This is one of the largest ever allocations from the lottery fund to an organisation in Co. Wicklow," Brady said. The new leisure centre is an ambitious development. It will have en-suite dressing rooms, an indoor play area, meeting rooms and a coffee lounge. It will be available to the whole community. The National Lottery funding will finance the first phase of this project. |
