"Fianna Fail won't be intimidated by vandals" - Roche

Tuesday, May 15 2007

Dick Roche, the Minister for the Environment, has branded as "thugs and vandals" those involved in the destruction of election posters in the Wicklow constituency.

Roche, who has been a particular target in the wave of vandalism, declared “my election team will not be intimidated by people who have been wrecking election posters and billboards, usually under the cover of darkness”.

"These vandals have lost the political argument and are now seen in their true colours. I'll debate anyone anywhere on my record of delivering for the people of Wicklow and East Carlow. It's time for the thugs to quit hiding in the darkness and show their faces. People talk about opinion polls, but you know that you are winning the argument when some of your opponents are reduced to wrecking posters," said the Minister.

Roche called on all candidates seeking election in Wicklow to state their opposition to and abhorrence of anti-democratic intimidation "which has no place in any democratic election".

"It is the ultimate back-handed compliment. These thugs, who are destroying property by night, haven't the courage to engage in democratic debate. The many thousands of decent people in Wicklow recognise this thuggery for what it is - the action of losers who haven't a single positive idea in their heads and who are reduced to the level of petty criminals."

The Minister vowed to continue bringing Fianna Fail's message of achievement to the people of Wicklow during the remainder of the hard-fought campaign. "The more desperate the thugs become, the stronger is the evidence that the argument is being won. Vandalism of election posters is no more than a sign that the cowards have run up the white flag."

Minister Roche has thanked the many people who have contacted him to report acts of vandalism. Details of vehicles involved will be passed to the Gardai.
