Councillor Blames NRA for Tragic N11 AccidentTuesday, April 24 2007Cllr. Andrew Doyle, Fine Gael General Election candidate for Wicklow, says the blame for Monday’s traffic accident at Ballinameesda Bends, which claimed two lives, lies firmly with the National Roads Authority.
Cllr. Doyle says that while a decision to upgrade this lethal stretch of road from a single carriageway to a dual carriageway was taken in 2005, funding for the work has repeatedly been refused by the National Roads Authority. “Wicklow County Council has been at the ready since 2005 to build this important and essential new road but the National Roads Authority has continually refused to release the required funding. This is the last remaining stretch of single carriageway on the N11 in Co. Wicklow and in the past decade it has claimed 18 lives, including the victims of yesterday’s accident. The National Roads Authority really does have a lot to answer for.” “This is a ridiculous situation and it is an absolute disgrace that more people have had to die on this road to bring this situation back into the public domain. Action needs to be taken urgently before anyone else loses their life needlessly. If Fine Gael is elected to power in the forthcoming General Election, I give you my word that work will begin on this road immediately.” “I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sympathy to the families of the two men who died in this terrible accident on Monday. Our thoughts are also with those who were badly injured in the incident.” |
