Friday, April 27 2007

Arklow and Wicklow Town have joined Mallow, Cobh, Midleton, and Ballina to become major towns with populations of over 10,000 people each, according to new Census figures from Central Statistics Office. The Census figures show the number of these towns has increased from 28 to 34 in the last four years.

In contrast to the five major cities, Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford, have been losing population share compared with the rest of the country. Figures show that the cities grew by only half the rate of the whole country in the four years between 2002 and 2006. Galway city was the only exception to the trend with population growth of almost 10% in the four years.

The census also recorded that the number of villages with at least 50 occupied households and with a population of less than 1,500 increased in population by 18.6% in the inter-censal period. In the counties of Wicklow Dublin, Meath, and Kildare the population of these small villages increased by over one third while elsewhere in the state the increase in the village population was one sixth.
