Call for Elected Council for West WicklowThursday, May 17 2007Citing recent population growth and its distance from the east of the county, Cllr. John Brady of Sinn Féin has called for an elected council to serve the western part of Wicklow.
Brady said recent Central Statistics Offices figures show that Blessington has grown by 60.1% while Baltinglass has grown by 37.7%. "When surrounding areas are included, it now transpires that there are 12,459 voters on the register in West Wicklow. Yet they have just three county councillors," Brady said. "The entire western portion of the county has been neglected and abandoned. People there deserve proper representation. They need a say in planning. They should be able to lobby local representatives for facilities and infrastructure," Brady said. "As it stands, the eastern part of Wicklow is the most populous and has the most councillors. However, it is cut off from West Wicklow. Councillors from the east don't have a good feel for what is happening in the west. A local council would go a long way towards addressing those problems," Brady said. |
