Brady Welcomes General Election CallSunday, April 29 2007Cllr. John Brady of Sinn Féin has welcomed the Taoiseach's decision to finally call the general election.
"There are a number of very important issues that need to be addressed in Co. Wicklow. We now have a population of just over 126,000. Yet this is the only major county in the State without a general hospital. I recently launched a campaign to have a hospital built in Newcastle. Since then a number of other general election candidates have come on board. I welcome their support and look forward to working with them in future to make this hospital a reality," Brady said. "Class sizes are way too high for a country this rich. More teachers are needed. More schools need to be built. And old schools must be fixed up and made fit for a modern education. Children with disabilities and learning difficulties should be looked after by the State. One prime example is in Barnacoyle, Co. Wicklow. The State announced last year that it was withdrawing funding for St. Catherine's Special School for students with autism. Why are those kids not being looked after?" Brady demanded. "Several areas in the county have a bad drugs problem. I have received complaints from Bray and Arklow about hard-drug use and abandoned syringes. Health officials, Gardaí and community representatives need to work together to tackle this dangerous issue," Brady said. "Co. Wicklow has a poor record on providing affordable housing. Young people are being priced out of the market. Planning restrictions in certain areas are too severe. Waiting lists for social housing are scandalous. People are cooped up with relatives for years waiting for a place of their own to become available," said Brady. "We have to get serious in this county about tackling local environmental issues. We are still dealing with the fallout from illegal dumping. Arklow needs a sewage treatment plant. Bray needs an upgrade," Brady said. "Planning and infrastructure has to be handled properly. The DART should go as far as Kilcoole. The Luas extension should connect with the DART in Bray. Otherwise we will end up with a foolish repeat of the situation in town," Brady said. "This election will deal a lot with Fianna Fail's poor record in government and their allegiance to off-the-wall ideologues in the tiny PD party. I am firmly against imposing any more stealth taxes on people. I am also against imposing any regressive taxes or charges on them. I oppose the bin taxes because they hit the working people harder. I oppose water charges for the same reason," Brady said. |
