Brady Challenges Candidates on TaxationWednesday, May 2 2007Cllr. John Brady has called on the other general election candidates to clearly state their opposition to stealth charges and regressive taxation.
"The latest trial balloon was in the Sunday Business Post. This article quoted government and European officials on the 'need' for a new television type licence to be slapped on computers," Brady said. This is the second such suggestion that has been printed in recent months in the national media. "I am calling on all candidates to oppose this new tax. It is regressive and unfair because the less well off will have to fork out a much higher percentage of their income. It is also double taxation since televisions and computers are already burdened with a 21% tax (VAT)," Brady noted. "Sinn Féin is totally opposed to these kind of sneaky, discriminatory taxes. They hurt those least able to afford them. The increase inequality in society by putting computers out of reach for those who could do with IT knowledge and skills. We are committed to reforming the unjust and unfair sales tax system in this country. Slapping another 21% on the price just so the incompetent Fianna Fail/lunatic PD government can fritter it way or give to their builder buddies is not good enough," Brady said. |
