Brady Calls for Clarification on Wicklow HospitalThursday, May 10 2007While welcoming their support for his campaign to build a hospital in Co. Wicklow, Cllr. John Brady of Sinn Féin has called on the other general election candidates to clarify their stances.
"I launched this campaign a few weeks ago. To my surprise and delight a number of other politicians rowed in behind me. However, some issues still need to be cleared up," Brady said. Cllr. Brady is Sinn Féin's candidate in the upcoming general election. Brady pointed to the contradictory stances taken by the Labour Party's candidates. "Nicky Kelly agrees with me that a hospital built in Newcastle to serve the county's 126,000 residents. However, Lady Wicklow (Liz McManus) says there should be no Wicklow hospital and that Loughlinstown is adequate. Fianna Fail has great fun pointing to policy differences between Fine Gael and Labour. Why bother when two Labour candidates in the same county cannot even agree?" Brady said. "Meanwhile, a Fine Gael candidate called Andrew Doyle agrees with my Newcastle proposal. The problem there is that his party leader is in favour of continuing to give away public land to developers of private hospitals. The facility in Newcastle should be available to all. That is, a public hospital," Brady said. "One other issue that the candidates are avoiding is the nurses' dispute. I support their campaign. This is a very hard working group of people. They have a job, quite frankly, that a lot of us would not be able to handle. Why should they get paid one-tenth what the consultants get?" Brady concluded. |
