Affordable Homes Boost for Wicklow

Sunday, April 8 2007

The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr. Dick Roche, T.D., has announced that 46 affordable homes are being provided in Arklow as part of a recently launched initiative to increase the supply of affordable housing. Under the first phase of this initiative, an additional 500 affordable homes are being provided in the Greater Dublin Area, where affordability pressures are greatest.

An advertising campaign inviting applications from interested purchasers meeting the eligibility criteria is now being launched and the first of the homes should be ready from June this year. Commenting today, Minister Roche welcomed the fact that it has been possible to deliver homes in Wicklow under this new initiative. "Determined to make significant progress on ramping up the delivery of affordable housing to meet the ambitious targets we have set, we asked the Affordable Homes Partnership in late 2006 to source 500 homes in the market in the Greater Dublin Area. As part of that exercise, 46 high
quality homes are now being provided at discounted prices in Arklow. I want to thank the Partnership, along with Wicklow County Council and Arklow Town Council, for their speedy and efficient response to delivering these additional homes in County Wicklow."

An intensive advertising campaign will commence next week starting with radio adverts on East Coast FM and advertisements in the Wicklow papers. These ads will be supplemented by a leaflet drop in Arklow and Wicklow.

The delivery of affordable housing under this mechanism of direct purchases in the market will supplement delivery being achieved through existing mechanisms, including under Part V of the Planning and Development Acts and developments on State lands. Overall, some 5,000 affordable homes are expected to be delivered nationwide this year.
