€780,000 Approved for Wicklow Disability Services

Thursday, April 19 2007

Mr. Dick Roche, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, has approved funding for 2007 totalling €15 million to local authorities and bodies under his Department's aegis to continue a programme of work under the National Disability Strategy.

Included in the funding is €780,000 for Wicklow County Council. Announcing the allocations, the Minister said, "I am delighted that the allocations will enable Wicklow County Council to continue the implementation of the services included in the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government's Sectoral Plan. I know that the Council has been working hard in the past two years to make their buildings and services more accessible, the benefit of which extend not just to people with disabilities but to the community as a whole, this funding will help strengthen their efforts in the coming year".

Funding was introduced in 2005 and continues this year to progress a multi annual programme of initiatives, prioritised by local authorities, under the National Disability Strategy. The funding will be used to provide, and improve where needed, accessibility to public buildings, roads and pavements, parks, amenities, heritage sites and other public areas for which local authorities have responsibility. It will also be used to undertake accessibility audits, complete implementation plans, adapt information systems and equipment for people with disabilities, and to provide training for local authority staff to heighten their awareness of the needs of people with disabilities.
