30% increase in Sexual Offences in Wicklow/ WexfordSunday, May 13 2007There has been an incredible 30% increase in the number of sexual offences occurring in the Wicklow / Wexford region over a 12 month period, according to research conducted by Cllr. Andrew Doyle, Fine Gael general election candidate in Co. Wicklow.
Figures released by An Garda Siochana show that 99 sexual offences where recorded in the Co. Wicklow / Co. Wexford region in 2005, compared with 76 sexual offences being recorded in 2004. This surge in offences now places the Co. Wicklow / Co. Wexford region the 4th highest for sexual offences nationwide out of a total of 19 regions, excluding Dublin. In 2004, the Co. Wicklow / Co. Wexford region was placed 6th on this list. Cllr. Andrew Doyle says extra community Gardai in counties Wicklow and Wexford would help curb this escalating problem. “I find it incredibly frightening that the Co. Wicklow / Co. Wexford region is now rated the 4th highest area in Ireland, excluding Dublin, for sexual offences. I have four children of my own and it disturbs me to think that this is happening at such an alarming rate in our area. I also have no doubt that the figure of 99 reported cases is probably an understatement as you can be sure that for every case that is reported, there is possibly another two cases that go untold.” “I believe the answer to this sensitive issue is more community Gardai for the region. They have the expertise and knowledge to deal with this complex and harrowing work. More community Gardai would not only offer Co. Wicklow more protection but it would also improve relationships with the general public and encourage people to report such crimes.” “If elected in the next General Election, Fine Gael promises more Gardai on our streets and consistent sentences from judges. Fine Gael will also introduce new rights for victims of crime. We need to act now to ensure this problem doesn’t escalate and to make our county a safer place to live and work.” |
