1916 Commemorations to be Held Around WicklowFriday, April 6 2007Wicklow Sinn Féin have organised Easter commemorations in several locations around county Wicklow. "The Proclamation of Independence is a great document. It guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and aims to cherish all the children of the nation equally," said Sinn Féin Cllr. John Brady.
"Of course there is a little irony in the last comment since just this week Bertie Ahern's Department of Education fought and won a High Court case to wiggle out of its responsibilities to provide an education for a 6-year-old autistic boy in Arklow," Brady noted. "Other ironies abound. Children in St. Catherine's, Newcastle, are being taught in converted toilets. Prefabs are routine in schools around the country. Class sizes are immense and a national scandal. Of course, with an election coming up, Fianna Fail will promise the sun, moon and stars to desperate parents. But the question everyone should ask FF is: Why were these things not done during your 10 years in government?" Brady said. "On a lighter note, I would like to challenge deputyl Liz McManus, to repeat the comments she made last year calling for British soldiers who suppressed the 1916 Rising to be honoured by the State. It seems like she missed the point of the Rising. The ones inside the GPO were the good guys. It just shows you how far removed these Dublin 4 'socialists' have become from the working class. To add insult to injury, McManus claims membership of Labour, the party of James Connolly. Connolly himself was executed for his leadership of the Rising. Now McManus is calling for Connolly's killers to be treated as heroes," Brady said. There will be three commemorations in Co. Wicklow this year. All are welcome. Arklow's will take place on Saturday. It starts at 2:30 pm at Arklow Vale Pottery and will proceed to the park on Main Street. Cllr. John Brady will be the main speaker. The Easter Sunday parade will take place in Blessington. It starts at 11:30 on the Main Street. Cllr. Brady will be the main speaker again. A parade will then be held in Bray on Easter Monday. It assembles at 11:30 at the Town Hall and will proceed to the 1798 memorial on Castle Street. |
