Hello Mark Lawless and David Caswell,
On my visit back to Ireland in 1980 my wife and I stayed
in that teriffic Vale View Hotel. The food was great as was the beer. My cousin who is a Hughes made us the Château Briand. It was incredible! I live in New York now and we once visited Avoca New York. There was a man that ran a hotel in that town who had been in the Vale View for a party for people from towns called Avoca from all over the world. He could remember going to some pubs at night with the owner in his Jaguar. Any idea who that would be?
Rich

Hi Avoca resident.

I have never met this Ann-Marie but I know that she has blonde hair. For legal reasons I can't really go into details on why we need to contact her. A relation of mine was involved with an ex of hers (I mentioned his name in my first notice) he is from dublin...we would like more information on his past history...as I said, this is a legal issue now, so cannot go into to much detail.

I know 2 Ann Marie's from Avoca and the two of them are attached and have children.

Can you tell me what the Ann Marie you know looks like.

Hi folks, will be staying in Avoca 25th June till 1st July 2006 and just wondered if there was anything happening we should be putting into our very laid back schedule, apart that is from a few pints in Fitzgeralds.

Hi David,
Just noticed your post and wanted to say hi after all these years! I haven't been in touch with your family in far too many years so please pass on my regards to all in the Arbours with a special hi to Margaret. I spent many a day and night in Avoca and have all special memories.

Hello Mark! That's me - I was at the Vale View in the early 80's, working the bar. It was an amazing time to be there. I think Mahon was a real artist with how he ran that place - it was basically an extension of his personality. And he definitely had an artistic temperament at times!

Hey David
I think I remember you. Did you live at Tinnahinch, between DIck Fannings and Morans garage ? Mum Maisie, Sis Margaret ? You would have worked at the Vale View before my time. I was there 1987/88. Mahon a good man alright, but difficult at times, as you will remember !

I used to work at the Vale View in the 80's too! It is a crying shame what's happened to it - I think there's some kind of insurance dispute that's holding up the repairs. But the longer they wait the worse state the place will be in.

Its difficult to imagine the place even approaching its former glory without Mahon O'Brian. Men like him are not common in this world...

Can anyone tell me what has become of the Vale View Hotel? I used to work there back in the 80's. I know there was a fire some years ago, but it has never re-opened. Anyone know of any plans to do anything with it ? Is it for sale ? Mahon O'Brien would turn in his grave if he could see the place now.

I first came to Avoca with my Mum as she is a big fan of Ballykissangel. But I now come back every 6 months because it is the beautiful village I fell in Love with. I go to the same places every time but never tire of them. You all have such a beautiful village and of course I have to give Riggs, the local dog a cuddle! The Handweavers serves gorgeous food as does Fitzgeralds. The Meetings is one of my favourite places, early on a Sunday moring when you have it all to yourself! I can understand the residents would like it to be known for it's own merits other than Ballyk, but believe me when I say how lucky you are to live is such a place, and can wake up to that beauty every day. I'm only young myself, so can see me coming back for many years to come. Thankyou you all for your hospitality.

Re Avoca poems, there are at least a few fairly new and original poems that were written by men relating to the mines, I have some of these but feel sure that there are likely to be many more. Anyone interested in reading these or adding more are welcome to contact me.

I enjoyed looking through the lovely pictures on this website. My ancestors emigrated from Avoca in 1855. James Quinn married to Anne Kelly with daughter Julia Quinn born in Avoca in 1848 and son James Quinn. Can anyone tell me where I can read about the history of Avoca in the mid-1800's? Thanks.
