Rathnew and Baltinglass to Advance in Senior Football Championship
July 20th, 2001

Senior football champions Rathnew are unlikely to be troubled very much when they take on Carnew in the Coillte sponsored championship in Aughrim on Sunday at 2-30 p.m.
While Carnew always provides formidable opposition in both football and hurling, the sheer strength and skill of Rathnew is unlikely to be matched by the men from the Wexford border. In fact, it is difficult to see Rathnew being deprived of the title again by any team in the county.
The curtain raiser to this match will be another senior championship tie between Kiltegan and An Tochar. The men from the west are also tough opponents but the major emphasis in that club these days seems to be hurling. An Tochar has some excellent players as was proven in the recent 3-13 to 2-6 defeat of East District and should come out on top.
The third championship match is between former greats, Baltinglass who take on Donard-Glen in Blessington at 7 p.m. While the former All-Ireland club champions have slipped in recent years, they should have little difficulty in disposing of the opposition in this one.
