The Internet and Wicklow

It is widely accepted that the Internet is one of the most dramatic developments in the history of media since at least the printing press. Centuries from now, technologies such as the telegraph, radio, the telephone and television will be seen merely as precursors to the Net - an ever present and instantly accessible source of information, images, sounds, and ideas. Few still believe that the Internet is a fad that will fade away with time. To the contrary, it is clearly a revolution that will change our world in many ways. Wicklow will be no exception.
A recent MRBI survey from the Information Society commission found that 41% of Irish people had access to the Internet. In county Wicklow this is equivalent to forty thousand people. There are over five hundred separate websites relating to some aspect of life in the Garden county, and more are being added almost daily. From Bray to Carnew all but the most local of businesses now use email and email addresses are as common and unremarkable as fax numbers. From its place on the cutting edge a few years ago the Internet is becoming quite normal.
We at WicklowToday.com intend to promote the development of the Internet in county Wicklow by providing a place on the Internet for the Garden county.
