Ballykissangel Criticism A Narrow View Of A Very Broad And Important Subject
March 8th, 2001
The view taken by the Evening Herald that Ballykissangel is boring and the people of Avoca defend it only because they can fleece English visitors is a narrow view in the extreme of a programme that is hugely important to the tourism and economy of Ireland.
If the writer has found the new series boring he is entitled to his view. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and his opinion of the show does not seem to be in agreement with the amount of foreigners who have been booking their visits to Avoca later in the year and claim that they love the latest storylines from Ballyk.
However, the storyline has little to do with the fact that the series has attracted hordes

of visitors to Ireland since it began filming in 1995 and has also earned a fantastic reputation as a `friendly set' where cast members will mingle with the public.
It is estimated that somewhere between 60 and 100 million people across the world watch the show every week and get a glimpse of beautiful Ireland. It is safe to assume that a large proportion of these people are getting a chance to see this country for the first time.
In comparison, the population of Avoca is around the 200 mark and only a small
percentage of them are in business. So to focus in on such a small part of the overall Ballykissangel operation is narrow minded to the extreme. Terms like ` begrudgery' or `being controversial for the sake of being controversial' spring to mind.
If the programme is axed it will cause major damage to the Irish economy not to mention the harmful effects to the many Irish actors who have been absent from the dole queues since the series began.
Local businessman, Tony Kelly described the criticism as `irresponsible' and he is probably quite correct if such articles turn viewers away from the show and bring down the ratings.
