The Heart of Irish Filmmaking in Wicklow
November 25th, 2000
Ardmore Studios situated in Bray County Wicklow is the heart of Irish Filmmaking and has over forty years of a track record to prove its pedigree. Some of the biggest names in world cinema have spent time at Ardmore producing some world-recognised classics. Over 100 feature films have been made since the Ardmore complex opened in 1958, involving such names as Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, and our own Richard Harris but to mention a few.
Ardmore's advantages become apparent when its geographical position are taken into account situated only 12 miles from the capital city of Dublin and yet in easy access to an abundance of different locations. The professionalism of the studio ranks with any available in the United Kingdom or for that matter any comparative studio of its size in the United States. This fact is borne out by the number of recent feature productions that have been produced there and indeed by those currently under production.
Indeed the present healthy vibrations in the Irish Film Industry in a notoriously competitive environment is testament to all those involved with Ardmore - present and past. This success not only comes down to professional film production but to the cost-effective measures put in place to make these productions an economical reality. Many of the productions have been nominated for Oscars or have won various awards around the world at different film festivals.
Some of the associated honour bestowed on Ardmore in its search for excellence includes Katharine Hepburn's Oscar for best Actress in the 1968 production of The Lion in Winter. My Left Foot in 1989 winning Oscars for 'Best Actor' (Daniel Day Lewis) and Best Supporting Actress (Brenda Fricker) and being nominated for Best Director (Jim Sheridan), Best Adapted Screenplay (Shane Connaughton and Jim Sheridan) and Best Picture.
