Heated Arguments Expected as Councillors Sit down to Decide Estimates

Heated debates are expected this afternoon in the chamber of Wicklow County
Council as the members sit down to decide on their spending for the coming
year in what is looking like another marathon session.
The agenda for the estimates meeting always looks innocent but when officials
get into the issue of expenditure on various projects and in different parts
of the county it often incites individual members of the Council, particularly
if they feel there is not enough being spent in their own district.

Illegal dumping which is the hot issue of the moment will undoubtedly come
up for discussion as officials reveal what they intend to spend on the refuse
service in the coming year. It is expected that outspoken councillors on
the issue, Tommy Cullen from Labour and Deirdre de Burca of the Green Party
will be particularly vocal on this subject.
It is the aim of the Council to finish the debate on estimates in one day
so it is unlikely to be finished by the statutory time of 5 p.m. and, like
several other meetings this year, could run up to 10 o'clock tonight. |
