Convicted Killer Given Access to `Certain' Garda Documents

Convicted killer Catherine Nevin has been granted permission to seek certain
documents from Garda files in relation to Jack White's Inn where her husband,
Tom was shot dead five years ago. She has been seeking these documents
as she prepares to appeal the life sentence handed down by the Central
Criminal Court last year for the murder of her husband.
During her trial, Mrs. Nevin contended at all times that here late husband
was a member of the IRA. A large part of the evidence that convicted her
was that she had approached members of the IRA and had asked them to shoot
her husband.

Her lawyers have since been seeking documents from
Garda headquarters particularly in relation to a meeting that took place
where Jack White's pub was discussed. When the application came before the
Court of Criminal Appeal this morning, Mrs. Nevin was granted access to
`certain' documents.
In the meantime, the High Court is hearing an application made by Gardai
Mick Murphy and Vincent Whelan who claim that they were unfairly treated
by the Garda Authorities. Both men were suspended back in the mid-nineties
following allegations made against them by Catherine Nevin.
The Gardai were suspended while the investigation was taking place. However,
when the file went to the Director of Public Prosecutions he issued a
directive that no prosecution should take place. They were allowed back
on duty but were later confined indoors.
The court's decision on whether or not it considers that the men were
treated unfairly is expected soon.
