Arklow man is Wicklow FBD Young Farmer of
the Future 2001

Tony Kiernan from Ballycoog Macra won the Wicklow round of the FBD Young Farmer of the Year Awards 2001 which is run in partnership with Macra na Feirme and the IFA. Tony will now represent his county in the national final, which takes place in September.
Tony, from Arklow, Co Wicklow, holds an national certificate in farming.
Former chairman of Ballycoog Macra club, he is still highly involved in the local community.
Speaking on the future of farming, Tony said farm size would increase in the future. The main emphasis will be on producing quality food in an environmentally friendly fashion, which is easily traceable.
IFA National Animal Health Rep, Mr Declan O Neill said he was delighted to see a competition that promotes the positive aspects of farming. It showed there is a future and problems such as foot-and-mouth disease and BSE are surmountable.
Macra na Feirme's, Mr John Mooney said farming still offers a varied and challenging work environment and is still a viable profession.
Mr Jim Healy of Wicklow Rural Partnership said the standard of applicants over the past two years clearly shows the level of skills which Ireland's young farmers possess and this year is no different.
The overall winner of the competition wins a travel bursary worth £2000 and £1000 spending money.
