Situation at Greystones North Beech Going From Bad To Disastrous
April 23rd, 2001
"Just when we thought that things could not get any worse on Greystones
beleaguered North Beach things seem to be going from bad to disastrous "
according to Greystones Town Commissioner and local TD, Dick Roche.
Dick, who has been campaigning for months to have on the County Council
undertake improvement works on the North Beach in Greystones, has suggested that
" the reports that a District Court Justice has ruled that the encampment which
is without sanitation on the North Beach may stay put until Wicklow County
council provide them with proper accommodation have filled local law abiding
residents with an understandable feeling of despair.
Local householders are living in fear. I have received reports of threats and
broken windows.
The news that Greystones Sailing Club is to close the clubhouse and that one of
the Club's major race fixtures is now likely to use Bray as the venue? all

point to a situation that has gone totally out of control. In addition to the
Sailing Club, Greystones United the town's largest youth organisation, which
uses the lands at Darcy's field to provide a recreational outlet for hundreds of
young people, is directly affected. Even before the encampment became a problem
the access road to Darcy's Field had been allowed to deteriorate to an alarming
condition. For months the roadway has been virtually impassable and it is
questionable whether an ambulance could get to the playing area in the event of
an accident."
After the most recent developments Deputy Roche said, "law abiding citizens feel
that their rights are not being protected. As an elected representative of the
residents of the area I greatly resent the failure of the various statutory
agencies involved to protect the interests and the rights of my Constituents.
My Constituents who live in the North Beach area enjoy the same rights as other
citizens? Their rights are not being protected.
Even at this late stage I am calling on the Council to clear up the area, to
return the North Beach and the adjoining lands to full public use, to renew its
efforts to ensure that residents do not have to endure the smoke and toxins from
regular campfires of rubbish have caused and to consider taking the whole matter
to the Higher Courts if that is what is required to return this part of
Greystones to the peace & tranquillity that it previously enjoyed."
