Shock in Aughrim as Local Garda Found Dead in Car

May 11th, 2002

By Tony Murphy

A 43 year old Co. Wicklow garda who was stationed in Aughrim was found dead in his car yesterday in a forest close to the village. He was Garda Mick Kavanagh, a native of Rathdangan, who has been working in Aughrim village since 1996.

The late Garda Kavanagh was very much involved in community matters in the Aughrim area since his arrival there and was Secretary of the Disabled Anglers facility that has been a major tourist attraction in the area for the past few years.

He had not been seen since Wednesday evening and hitch hikers who were walking near a forest yesterday afternoon found his body in a car. Foul play is not suspected.

The people of Aughrim were today expressing shock at the news of the tragedy as Garda Kavanagh was so well known both from his work and his involvement in community activities.

He is survived by his wife Nicki and four children. His youngest child is just two and a half years old. Funeral arrangements will be made as soon as a post mortem examination is completed.
