No Territorial Divisions in the Fianna Fail Election Campaign

March 30th, 2002

By Tony Murphy

The two Fianna Fail candidates in the forthcoming general election, Minister of State Joe Jacob and Deputy

Minister of State Joe Jacob
Dick Roche will both be canvassing for votes across the entire county instead of taking seperate territories, Wicklowtoday.com has learned.

In the past, party strategy dictated that Roche would campaign largely in the northern and north/eastern section of the county while Jacob's domain would be Wicklow, Arklow and the more rural areas.

However, it has been decided this time out that both will be given a free run at the entire constituency of Wicklow and North East Carlow to pull in as many votes as they can.

While it is understood that Fianna Fail is looking upon this strategy as the best one for the party some

Deputy Dick Roche
sources say that the campaign could become a free-for-all with each candidate likely to step into each other's `territory' and cause friction.

It is a well known fact that Jacob and Roche bring with them two seperate camps within the party in this constituency and are far from being bosom buddies.

The last thing that Fianna Fail will want is friction that may cause problems for the party and put one of the two seats in danger.
