Wicklow Goes Wild as Ireland Beats Saudis in the World Cup
June 12th, 2002

County Wicklow went wild after Ireland beat Saudi Arabia by 3-0 to qualify for the last sixteen in the World Cup. The main towns of Bray, Wicklow, Greystones and Arklow took on an atmosphere this afternoon similar to a carnival in Rio.
The day was carefully planned by most people in the county who had either arranged to have the day off or to take time out to

watch the match. However, judging by the atmosphere across the county, very few people seemed to have returned to their work place.
Some companies arranged matters so that staff could watch the game at their place of work. Most schools in the county, including St. Joseph's and St. Bridget's in Newtownmountkennedy, allowed pupils to view the game before letting them home.
Even proceedings in Wicklow Circuit Court were adjourned close to 12-30 so that court staff and defendants could get away for the game.
The big relief on the part of employers now is that the next match against Spain will take place on Sunday next at 12-30 p.m. when most companies are closed.
